If you've ever opened your phone's battery screen, seen your VPN sitting near the top of the list, and quietly switched it off, new testing by West Coast Labs suggests you were reading a number that doesn't mean what it appears to mean.

Running NordVPN continuously for a full 24 hours added 1.4% to daily battery use on Android and 1.8% on iOS. Meanwhile, during streaming sessions, the phone's own battery usage screen attributed an average of 49% of session battery consumption to the VPN app.

Both numbers are real. Only one of them is measuring battery.

Why your battery screen blames the VPN

This is the part worth understanding, because it generalises far beyond one product.

Your operating system doesn't have a power meter wired to each app. It estimates consumption and attributes it to whichever app owns the activity. For network use, that means the app that owns the network interface the traffic went through.

A VPN owns the network interface. Every byte your phone sends or receives — the video you're streaming, the app refreshing in the background, the photo syncing to the cloud — travels through the VPN's tunnel. So the OS looks at hours of radio activity and megabytes of transfer, sees the tunnel interface, and attributes all of it to the VPN.

But that energy was going to be spent regardless. Streaming a two-hour film costs the same radio time and roughly the same transfer whether or not a tunnel is involved. Turning the VPN off doesn't reclaim that 49% — it just redistributes the same figure onto the streaming app instead.

The VPN's actual additional cost is the encryption work and the modest protocol overhead. When West Coast Labs measured current draw with hardware instruments rather than reading the OS estimate, that real overhead came out under 2%.

So the battery screen isn't lying so much as answering a different question: which app's interface did this traffic pass through, not how much extra energy did this app cause. For every app except a VPN, those two questions have nearly the same answer. For a VPN, they diverge enormously — and the number people have been acting on for years is the wrong one.

What it costs in practice

The honest way to state the finding is that the cost is real but small. Running NordVPN all day on a flagship Android phone means, across a month, reaching for the charger roughly half a day earlier than you otherwise would.

That is a genuine cost. It is not "VPNs kill your battery."

Protocol choice is where the real difference is

The testing also compared protocols, and here the gap is much wider than the always-on penalty:

  • It was commissioned. West Coast Labs is a genuine independent testing house, and instrumented current-draw measurement is a far better method than reading the OS estimate. But this testing was run for NordVPN, on NordVPN, and the finding is flattering to NordVPN. That doesn't make it wrong — the mechanism it describes is real and applies to every VPN — but "vendor-funded lab finds vendor's product is fine" warrants the same scepticism we apply to any vendor benchmark, as we set out in our testing methodology.
  • Flagship devices. Testing spanned flagship Apple, Samsung and Google hardware. A four-year-old budget phone with a weaker modem, a worn battery and poorer signal is a different situation — and poor signal in particular costs battery independently of any VPN, because the radio transmits harder to stay connected.
  • The measured scenario is continuous operation. 1.4% and 1.8% represent a VPN left on for 24 hours, which is the demanding case rather than a lenient one.

What to actually do with this

  • Stop using the battery screen to judge your VPN. The figure it shows you is a routing artifact. If you want to know the true cost, compare your overall battery life across a few days with the VPN on versus off — that's the only comparison the number supports.
  • Check your protocol before you blame the app. A 24–31% swing from a setting you can change in ten seconds dwarfs the always-on penalty.
