Campus Wi-Fi is the one network a student can't avoid and can't configure. It's shared with thousands of strangers, it's run by an IT department with its own monitoring and shaping policies, and it's the connection every laptop, phone and tablet in the dorm defaults to. Less than most back-to-school security posts imply, and more than nothing.

What's still visible is the metadata. The network operator — and, on an unencrypted network, anyone nearby — can see which servers you connect to, when, and how much data moves. Domain names leak through DNS and TLS handshakes even when contents don't. On a university network that's not a hypothetical adversary: it's the IT department, with logs.

And the shaping is real. Universities routinely prioritise academic traffic and throttle whatever looks like bulk streaming, especially in the evening. That's not surveillance, it's bandwidth management — but it's the thing you'll actually notice.

What it does not do

Worth being blunt, because student-focused VPN marketing tends to be vague here.

  • It does not hide you from the university's own systems. Anything you do inside their portal, mail or learning platform is theirs regardless of the tunnel.
  • It does not defeat plagiarism detection, proctoring software or account-based tracking. Different mechanisms entirely.
  • It does not make a slow connection fast. It can route around traffic shaping aimed at specific services; it can't add bandwidth that isn't there.

Check this before you install anything

Read your university's acceptable-use policy. A minority of institutions restrict or block VPN use on their own networks, and a few treat circumventing network policy as a disciplinary matter rather than a technical annoyance. Most don't care. Five minutes on the IT services page is worth more than any recommendation in an article — including this one.

Why students in particular get value

Three things line up in a way they don't for most other users:

One correction worth making: the Premier League season opens on Friday 21 August, not the 22nd — the 22nd is the first full weekend of fixtures. If you're planning around the opening match, that's a day earlier than most round-ups say.
